Secondary Metal Recyclers - Metal Theft Handbook
GAR was proud to work on the passage of HB 872, which we hope will cut down on the number of metal theft crimes across the state. Most importantly, HB 872 restricts metal recyclers from paying cash for restricted metals. Payments can be made by check, payment voucher, or electronic funds transfer. These provisions are designed to prevent criminals’ access to quick cash. Additionally, the bill restricts metal recyclers from purchasing air conditioning unit coils unless the seller is a licensed HVAC contractor or has documentation they have purchased a new unit. Additional regulations are put in place that require metal recyclers to be permitted by the local sheriff and requires the recyclers to photograph or video the metal they purchase and file on record alongside the picture identification of the seller.

Georgia's Regulated Metals Recycling Law regulates anyone meeting the definition of a Secondary Metals Recycler. You can read the full Georgia Secondary Metals Compliance Guide by visiting:  Amendments made in 2012 to the law significantly changed the metal recycling industry in Georgia. If you are involved in these kind of business transactions, please consult the manual to ensure you are complying with the law.
