Legal Shield Information on Equifax Breaches:

EQUIFAX BREACH FAQ’S

Concerned about the Equifax breach? We understand and we’re here to help. About half of the US population's personal data has been compromised. Does it scare you? What have you done about it? Is your ID Shield Protection in place for you and your family? The Equifax breach is a stark reminder that forces beyond your control can lead to the exposure of your personal information. It’s also an important reminder that everyone needs identity theft protection. Every year 10 million Americans have their identity stolen. Here are some answers to your most frequently asked questions.

How did this happen: Equifax identified a cybersecurity incident potentially impacting approximately 143 million U.S. consumers? Criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files. Equifax discovered the unauthorized access and acted immediately to stop the intrusion. Equifax promptly engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm that has been conducting a comprehensive forensic review to determine the scope of the intrusion, including the specific data impacted. Equifax also reported the criminal access to law enforcement and continue to work with authorities.

What information was accessed: The information accessed primarily includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. In addition, credit card numbers for approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers, and certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers, were accessed. As part of its investigation of this application vulnerability, Equifax also identified unauthorized access to limited personal information for certain UK and Canadian residents.

What protection is Equifax Offering: Free credit reporting, see the ID Shield comparison sheet here.

Why was there a delay between when the incident was discovered and the public was notified? As soon as Equifax discovered the unauthorized access, Equifax acted immediately to stop the intrusion. The company promptly engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm which has been conducting a comprehensive forensic review to determine the scope of the intrusion, including the specific data impacted. Because this incident involves a substantial amount of personal identifying information, the investigation has been complex and time-consuming. As soon as we had enough information to begin notification, we took appropriate steps to do so.

Am I Impacted: Go to https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/am-i-impacted/ and follow the instructions to see if you or your family member has been affected. It is recommended you check periodically as compromises are occurring daily.

What do I do if I was impacted: Enroll yourself/family in ID Shield at http://www.legalshield.com/info/garealtors . We recommend that members be vigilant in reviewing their account statements and credit reports, and that they immediately report any unauthorized activity to their financial institutions.

What can ID Shield do: At IDShield, we know how stressful data breaches are and we’re here to help. Members have access to our dedicated and experienced licensed private investigators to ask questions and get help if they have concerns they are a victim of fraud.
