AGENT ALERT: Potential Identity Theft Scam 11 Oct 2012 - The Department of Business and Professional Regulation in Florida (comparable to Georgia’s Real Estate Commission) has received information indicating its license holders are being targeted by a potential identity theft scam.
A real estate broker recently received an unsolicited email claiming his brokers’ licenses were the subject of disciplinary action from an entity posing as the Department. The broker was directed to call a toll-free number and provide personal identification information to a person who was allegedly a Department investigator. Upon further investigation, the Department has determined this email communication is in no way connected with the Department or its regulatory authority.
While this incident occurred in Florida, due to its close proximity, Georgia REALTORS® should be aware of this scam.
Georgia REALTORS®: If you or any other license holder receives an email from an entity claiming to be the Georgia Real Estate Commission and warning you of impending disciplinary action, do not respond to the email or call the listed number. Instead, contact GREC directly at 404-656-3916.
Do not provide your personal identification information if you are not certain the person requesting the information is doing so for official purposes. The theft of personal identification information is a crime and should be reported immediately to local law enforcement.
